Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 10 December 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 11 line. This release has a patent leather upper in White/Varsity Red/Black. The Air Jordan 11 is the model that put patent leather on a basketball court, and Cherry is one of the palettes that shows exactly why that decision mattered. Patent brought formal wear material into performance footwear, and it is the reason this model gets worn with suits rather than only with sportswear. The 11 belongs to the Tinker Hatfield run, when the line stopped being a signature shoe and became a design series with its own language, and it is still the model that argues hardest that a basketball shoe can be dressed. Play to the model's dress code argument. First: black tailored trousers with a clean break, a white shirt, a black knit tie if the room allows it, and let the cherry patent be the only colour in the outfit. Second: dark selvedge denim, a white tee, a black overcoat, keeping everything matte so the gloss stands out. Occasion is evening, events, weddings people would not expect it at. Fit is true to size with a snug collar. Care: dry soft cloth on the patent, never a brush, mild soap on the white upper sections, and store them boxed away from heat, which can cloud patent and yellow white panels.
Patent leather is the single clearest example of the brand rewriting what a sports shoe is allowed to be, and the 11 carries that reputation into rooms where sneakers were once refused. Air Jordan reached culture through the collision of basketball and hip hop, with rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing the shoes, and it created sneaker collecting as a mass activity along the way. The 11 is the model most often worn as formal footwear by people who have no interest in basketball, and Cherry is one of the make ups that gets used that way.
The 11's structure is unusual for the line: a low cut patent leather mudguard wrapping the base of the shoe, a lightweight upper above it, a high collar behind, and a carbon fibre shank plate of the kind the line introduced for torsional stiffness. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the range since the Air Jordan II. The patent panel is what dictates ownership: it does not scuff like leather, it scratches, and deep scratches do not brush out. The white sections around it will discolour long before the red does, so storage and early cleaning matter more than heavy cleaning later.
