Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 5 November 2025 as part of the Air Jordan 11 line. This release has the Deep Royal Blue/Sail/Black/Fire Red colourway. The Air Jordan XI is the model that put patent leather on a basketball court, which sounds small and was not. Bringing formal wear material into performance footwear is the reason people wear the XI with suits, and it remains the boldest material decision in the entire line. Rare Air is a colourway on that shape in a grade school size run, which means the most formally dressed silhouette Jordan Brand owns is being handed to the youngest buyers. The XI came out of the stretch when Tinker Hatfield had the line, from the Air Jordan III onward, and each model was making an argument rather than repeating the last.
Two ways to wear it. First, dressed up, which is the XI's real trick: dark tailored trousers with a plain knit, where the patent panel reads as a dress shoe finish rather than sportswear. Second, plain sportswear: black track pants with a white tee, letting the shine sit against matte fabric. Keep patent leather away from rough surfaces, since a scratch is permanent in a way a scuff on matte leather is not. Wipe with a soft damp cloth only, never brush the patent, store the pair boxed with paper in the toe, and keep it out of direct sun which can haze the finish.
The XI is the shoe that proved the line could change what a basketball shoe was allowed to be made of, and it did so while Air Jordan was already deep inside culture, with Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon in the earliest advertising and 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing Jordan and his sneakers. That combination is why the model carries formal weight: the material says one thing and the shape says another. The resale economy built on these shoes has been valued around 2 billion dollars, and the XI is one of the shapes that reliably drives it, in adult and grade school runs alike.
Patent leather is the construction story and the maintenance story at once. It wraps the lower half of the shoe as a structural mudguard, holds its shine, resists water better than untreated leather and scratches in ways that cannot be brushed out. Above it the XI uses a lighter upper that gives the shape its distinctive low, sleek profile. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the line since the Air Jordan II and sits underneath here over a rubber outsole. Wear it knowing that patent creases sharply at the flex point rather than softly, and that cleaning is a wipe with a damp cloth, never a brush and never a solvent.
