Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 16 October 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 14 line. This release has a suede upper in Archaeo Brown/Multi-Color/Multi-Color. A winterized retro is the line admitting where these shoes actually spend their lives, which is on pavements in bad weather rather than on hardwood. The Air Jordan 14 comes from the end of Tinker Hatfield's original run with the series, a stretch in which each model made a different argument about what a basketball shoe could look like, and the 14 is among the most car influenced shapes in the catalogue. Rebuilding it for cold weather takes a shoe designed for a climate controlled arena and puts it somewhere it was never intended to go, which is exactly what the brand has been doing since it stopped being sports equipment.
Build the outfit around the weather, not the shoe. Recipe one: heavy dark denim with a straight leg, thick ribbed socks, a wool overshirt and a parka, so the shoe reads as the boot in the outfit. Recipe two: black technical trousers with an elasticated hem, a fleece, a shell jacket, keeping everything functional. Avoid cropped hems in winter: the ankle needs coverage. Salt is the real enemy on a winterized shoe, so rinse the outsole and lower panels after gritted pavements, dry them slowly away from radiators, and reapply a protector spray through the season rather than once.
Cold weather product is a natural consequence of a brand that moved outside basketball. Jordan Brand became sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team in 2016, which is a programme that plays outdoors in genuine winter, and sponsored Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, its first association football club. Those partnerships changed what the label had to make. A basketball retro rebuilt for snow and rain is the wardrobe version of the same shift, and it explains how a division that started with one shoe for one player ended up generating about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike by 2022.
Winterized builds in footwear generally mean a heavier upper, more coverage and a tread aimed at wet ground, and the value of that on a retro is that it lets you wear a silhouette in months when you would otherwise leave it in the box. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the line since the second model and remains the underfoot idea. Because the exact weatherproofing specification for this release has not been published, treat it as protection rather than as a guarantee: check the lining, the tread and any sealed seams in hand rather than assuming a technical rating the box does not claim.
