Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 3 February 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 3 line. This release has a leather upper in Ivory/Grey Mist/Cream. The Air Jordan 3 is the hinge of the entire line. After the first two models Nike handed the series to Tinker Hatfield, and the 3 is where a basketball shoe became a design programme: it introduced the elephant print, the grey cracked pattern that is now the brand's most recognisable material code, and it put the Jumpman on the tongue. Craft, as a treatment, strips the 3 back to its materials and lets texture carry the colour. In Ivory that means a near monochrome shoe where the elephant panel is not competing with a saturated Swoosh or a red heel. You end up looking at the pattern itself, which is exactly what the 3 introduced it for.
Recipe one: cream wide leg trousers with an oatmeal knit and a camel overcoat, a full tonal fit where the elephant panels are the only texture break. Recipe two: dark indigo denim with a black bomber and a white tee, using the ivory shoe as the bright point at the bottom of a dark outfit. This is a dry weather and considered wear shoe, not one for rain or long muddy days. The 3 generally fits true to size with room in the forefoot. Brush textured panels dry, spot clean pale leather with mild soap and minimal water, keep them off wet pavement, and store cool and dry, since ageing midsole materials degrade over time.
Elephant print is now strong enough to signal the brand without a Jumpman anywhere near it, which is rare for a material pattern. That is the legacy of the 3 and of the shift it started: from 1997 the line became Jordan Brand, a standalone division inside Nike with its own athlete roster, apparel and collaborations, and by 2022 it was worth about 5.1 billion dollars to the company. The 3 is also the model that made design, rather than the athlete alone, the reason to buy. An ivory tonal version is that argument at its most confident, since it removes the colour and trusts the pattern to do the work.
The 3's structure is unusual because the elephant print panels are not decoration, they are the toe and heel overlays, taking the abrasion a basketball shoe used to absorb. Nike Air cushioning, which the line adopted from the Air Jordan 2, sits in the midsole, and a rubber outsole carries traction. An Ivory Craft execution leans on tonal materials rather than contrast, so the difference between smooth and textured surfaces becomes the visual event. Practically, the 3 fits wider and more comfortably than an Air Jordan 1 and needs almost no break in. Pale uppers of this kind mark easily, and the midsole edge is the first place dirt collects.
