Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 13 February 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 6 line. This release has a nubuck upper in White/Black/Carmine. The Air Jordan 6 comes from the stretch when Tinker Hatfield had the line and each model was a step in an argument rather than a variation on the last. From the Air Jordan III onward the numbered shoes carried their own design language, and by the 6 that language was confident enough to build a silhouette around a shape idea instead of a logo. Carmine is one of the two colourways people mean when they simply say the 6, a hot red against white with black holding the edges. OG means the original proportions and the original mark placement rather than a modern reinterpretation. This is the model in the form the archive recognises without argument.
Two ways to wear it. First, white first: cream or ecru wide trousers, a white tee, and the carmine popping as the only saturated colour on you. Second, hard contrast: black jeans and a black jacket so the white upper becomes the bright object. This is a statement pair, better for going out than for wet commutes, and white leather in monsoon weather is a fight you lose. Clean the white panels with mild soap and a soft brush every few wears, treat scuffs immediately rather than later, and store with paper in the toe. Keep them out of direct sun, which yellows midsoles faster than walking ever will.
By the time the 6 arrived, Air Jordan had already changed what a sneaker could be. Nike's Spike Lee advertising, with Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon, had put the shoes into film language, and 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put them into records. The collecting economy that followed has been valued around 2 billion dollars in resale, with original pairs from the first year reaching about 20,000 dollars on StockX. The 6 later became a collaboration canvas too, since Travis Scott's Cactus Jack work covered the Air Jordan 1, 4 and 6. Carmine needs no guest name attached. It is the colourway people already wanted.
White uppers with red and black are the highest maintenance combination in the entire line, and you should buy this knowing it. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the Jordan line since the Air Jordan II, and the 6 sits in the era that used it under a substantial, padded upper over a rubber outsole. Expect real volume through the collar and a shoe that holds the ankle rather than disappearing around it. On foot the 6 wears warm and secure. The white panels will show every scuff, and midsoles on retro tooling yellow with light and age, so storage is part of ownership rather than an afterthought. Keep them boxed and out of sunlight between wears.
