AMI Paris Ami De Coeur Button Down Cotton Shirt Black
AMI Paris Ami De Coeur Button Down Cotton Shirt Black
Culture Note™
Origin
Alexandre Mattiussi spent years designing clothes he could not afford. He worked on Dior's 30 Montaigne menswear, was first assistant for menswear at Givenchy, then moved to Marc Jacobs, and the thing that finally pushed him out was realising he could not buy the sweaters he was drawing. AMI opened in 2011 on the opposite premise: Parisian clothes made for a friend rather than a collector. Ami means friend in French and doubles as his initials. The Ami de Coeur mark, a heart with an A inside it, arrived in 2017 and became the thing that made the brand famous. This black button down is the quiet version of that logo. The chest embroidery is tonal, so the heart sits black on black and reads as texture until someone looks twice.
Utility
Two ways to run it. Office into evening: tucked into grey wool trousers with black leather loafers, sleeves down, and let the mother of pearl buttons carry the detail. Weekend: worn open over a white tee with straight leg indigo denim and white sneakers, cuffs rolled twice. On sizing, the cut is classic and unisex, and AMI's own measurements put centre back length at 76 cm on the size M worn by a 189 cm male model and 75.5 cm on the XS worn by a 179 cm woman, so the grade is gentle. Take your usual shirt size and go up one only if you want it genuinely loose. Care matters on black cotton: machine wash at 30 degrees on gentle, no chlorine, never tumble dry, cool iron. Hang it while damp and the collar sets itself.
Influence
The heart did the heavy lifting. AMI went from 35 million euros in revenue in 2019 to 300 million for the year ending March 2023, passed 60 stores and 700 points of sale, sold a controlling stake to Sequoia Capital China in 2021, and turned up on screen in Emily in Paris. Mattiussi took the ANDAM award in 2013 and joined the Federation de la Haute Couture et de la Mode in 2016, which is the French system formally letting him in. The logo has become shorthand for a particular way of dressing: Parisian, warm, uninterested in status games, expensive without announcing it. A black button down with a tonal heart is the most restrained version of that, a signal only people who already own one will catch.
Construction
The shirt is 100 percent cotton cut to a classic fit, which means room through the chest without a boxy tent shape, so it tucks flat and still hangs straight when you leave it out. The collar is a button down, and those two collar buttons are what stop the points curling after a day in Indian humidity. The buttons are mother of pearl rather than plastic: they catch light differently, they do not go chalky after repeat washes, and on an all black shirt that faint iridescence is the only shine. There is a buttoned tab on the front and at the cuffs, the Ami de Coeur heart sits at the chest in tonal thread, and the shirt is made in Portugal on a unisex cut.
