Culture Note™
AMI began as a private joke that turned into a business. Alexandre Mattiussi launched the label in Paris in 2011, naming it after the French word for friend and after his own initials, following a career inside Dior menswear, Givenchy and Marc Jacobs. The turning point came while he was designing cashmere at Marc Jacobs and realised he could not afford the sweaters he was making. AMI was the answer: Parisian design without the wall around it. The ANDAM Fashion Award followed in 2013, membership of the Federation de la Haute Couture et de la Mode in 2016, and in 2017 he spun the house symbol out into its own line, the Ami de Coeur. This pink cotton tee is that idea at its most direct, one logo and nothing else asking for attention.
Two ways to wear it. First, the Parisian default: tucked loosely into wide pleated trousers in navy or stone, leather loafers below, nothing else competing, so the pink is the only colour in the outfit. Second, the weekend version: worn out over straight-leg blue denim with a light overshirt open on top and low-profile white sneakers. It handles brunch, travel and smart-casual offices, and it layers under a blazer without bulk. On sizing, the cut is oversized and unisex, so take your usual size for a clean modern line and go one up if you want it properly boxy. Wash cold on a gentle cycle, turn it inside out to protect the chest logo, skip the dryer, reshape flat, and keep pale pink cotton clear of deodorant marks.
The Ami de Coeur is one of the few luxury logos that works precisely because it is not shouting. Mattiussi drew it from his own monogram, an A wrapped into a heart, and by 2017 the symbol had earned a line of its own. It carried AMI from a small Paris label to more than 60 stores and 700 points of sale across New York, China and Japan, with revenue climbing from 35 million euros to around 300 million inside four years, then flagship openings in the Marais and in Brussels. Pink is where that logo is most itself: soft, unserious, unmistakably French. It signals that you know the house without asking anyone to read a wordmark across your chest.
Cotton, and not much else, which is the whole point. The body is 100 percent cotton jersey with a ribbed round collar that holds its shape through repeat washing instead of going wavy at the neck. The Ami de Coeur sits on the chest as a tone-on-tone treatment, an A crossed through a heart, so it reads as texture from across a room and only resolves as a logo up close. The cut is oversized and unisex, graded so a straight size lands with a dropped shoulder and easy room through the body rather than clinging. It is made in Portugal, and that is the detail that explains the hand: the jersey carries real weight, and the seams sit flat instead of rolling.
