Part of On Running's Cloud 5 line. This release has a mesh upper in Olive/Black. Olive Black is the Cloud 5 built for weather. The Cloud silhouette is On's most familiar shape, the low profile shoe that carried the brand from specialist running shops to about 6,000 retailers across 55 countries by 2019, and the waterproof version is what happens when a Swiss company applies that shape to a wet climate it knows well. The engineering behind it started in 2010 with Olivier Bernhard, a former Swiss Ironman champion, gluing sections of garden hose to a sole after Nike declined the idea. Olive over black is the sensible reading of a wet weather shoe: dark enough to survive puddle spray, warm enough not to look like standard issue kit.
Two ways to use it. Winter commute: olive shoe, black technical trousers, a dark shell, and thin wool socks, which keeps the whole fit rain ready without looking like hiking gear. Weekend: olive with black denim and a heavy cream knit, where the green warms up an otherwise cold palette. Best for wet pavements, cold morning runs and travel where you cannot control the weather. Size true, allow for a slightly thicker sock, and lace the midfoot firmly since a sealed upper gives less than a mesh one. Care matters: rinse salt and grit off after winter use, dry away from heat because heat degrades sealed seams, and never machine wash a waterproof shoe.
On is a Swiss company that has never pretended running only happens in good conditions. It grew from triathlon and road racing, sponsors the On Athletics Club coached by Dathan Ritzenhein, and even built bobsleigh shoes for the 2022 Winter Olympics, which tells you how comfortable it is with cold weather sport. A waterproof Cloud in olive is the everyday expression of that: not a statement shoe but the one that makes a grey month workable. The brand's wider cultural position, a design object people wear because it looks engineered, still applies here, just in the most functional register available in the range.
A waterproof build changes the calculation on a pod sole. CloudTec is structural, foam engineered into cavities that compress in multiple directions to take impact and steady the stride, and sealing the upper means the shoe holds warmth as well as keeping water out, so it works better in cold wet conditions than in summer rain. Olive on black hides splashback, and the darker midsole means the cavities do not show every bit of grit picked up from a wet pavement. Expect a closer, more sealed upper feel than the standard Cloud. Wear it as a weather shoe rather than a warm weather one, and treat breathability as the trade you have accepted, not a fault.
