Culture Note™
Part of On Running's Cloudmonster 2 line. This release has a mesh upper in Undyed/Frost. The Cloudmonster is the loudest version of On's idea. Where most of the range keeps the pods modest, this one builds them up and turns cushioning into the silhouette itself, which is why it became the model that converted people who had never cared about a Swiss running brand. The second version in Undyed Frost drops the colour argument entirely: an undyed, off white raw tone that leaves the shoe looking like material rather than product. That is a confident move for a shape this large. On was founded in Zurich in 2010 by Olivier Bernhard with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti, and fifteen years in, the Cloudmonster is the model that shows how far one garden hose prototype travelled.
Undyed Frost is a summer and shoulder season shoe, so build light around it. Look one: ecru wide leg trousers, a white tee and a washed denim shirt, keeping everything in the same unbleached family so the shoe looks intentional rather than accidental. Look two: grey technical shorts and an oversized grey hoodie for gym to street days, where the pod stack does the shape work. The Cloudmonster runs bulky by design, so size true and expect a taller ride than your other shoes. Care is the real commitment: spray it before first wear, wipe spills immediately, brush the pod cavities dry, and accept that a raw tone will warm slightly with wear, which is part of the finish.
On's route to relevance ran through endurance sport and then through a single equity deal: Roger Federer became a shareholder in November 2019 and lent his name to The Roger in July 2020, turning a runner's brand into a lifestyle object. The Cloudmonster carries that shift more visibly than anything else in the line, because its scale reads as design before it reads as performance. That fits the brand's current cultural meaning, which is closer to design object than to street: people wear On because it looks engineered. In an undyed finish, the model stops shouting about colour and starts making a material argument instead, which is the version the design leaning buyer tends to reach for.
Undyed Frost is exactly what it sounds like, a pale unfinished tone that shifts slightly across the upper because nothing has been pushed to a uniform colour. The engine is hexagonal CloudTec: pods that load energy on impact and unleash it on take off, which is the specific geometry On built for this model rather than a generic cushioning slab. Foam is shaped into that structure, not relied on by itself, so the ride sensation is spring rather than sink. Swiss designed out of Zurich, made in Indonesia and Vietnam. Undyed uppers are the least forgiving finish On makes, so protect before wear, clean with a foam cleaner rather than water, and keep them out of a washing machine entirely.
