Designed by Peter Moore and released on 11 June 2024 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Summit White/Baroque Brown/Phantom/Khaki. Khaki, baroque brown and phantom is the Dunk Low pretending it was never a basketball shoe. Strip the college colour logic out of the silhouette, which was designed so programmes could wear their own palette on court, and replace it with three shades of earth, and you get something that sits closer to a workwear boot than to a hardwood floor. That translation is the Dunk's real talent. The shape is simple enough, a low panelled court profile with a Swoosh across the side wall, that it accepts almost any colour argument you put on it. A muted brown and khaki block is the version bought by people who want the shape without the noise, which is now most people.
Brown and khaki want to be styled with texture, not with colour. First recipe: brown or olive corduroy trousers with a cream knit and a waxed jacket, an autumn fit where the shoe is the anchor. Second: washed black denim with a heavy ecru hoodie, where the earth tones stop the whole look from going flat. Avoid pure black tailoring, since brown and black together need commitment to look intentional. This is an autumn and winter shoe, best for city days and pubs rather than rain. Brush dry dirt off before wiping, use a mild solution rather than anything bleaching, and protect any suede or nubuck panels with a repellent before the first wear.
The Dunk was rescued from obsolescence by skateboarding, where the flat sole and padded tongue turned out to be exactly right for a board, and Nike SB built the platform into a canvas for collaborations and local stories. That relationship has had friction, including the 2005 use of Minor Threat's album art that drew Ian MacKaye's rebuke and a Nike apology. Alongside that, Nike court shoes carried the status weight established when Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became fixtures of urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s onward. Earth toned Dunks arrived once the shape was secure enough not to need a loud colourway to be recognised.
The build is the familiar Dunk Low platform: a panelled upper over a flat rubber outsole with a pivot pattern, a padded collar and a lace structure that lets you tune the fit across the midfoot. What earth toned colourways change is how the panelling reads, because khaki against baroque brown against phantom is a low contrast arrangement, so the shape reveals itself gradually rather than at a glance. Low contrast is also practical: dust, scuffs and general road grime blend into brown and khaki instead of announcing themselves. The toe crease still appears early, as it does on every Dunk, but on this palette it looks like patina rather than damage, which is a real advantage.
