Designed by Peter Moore and released on 18 February 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Midas Gold/Tough Red/White. Nike's first professional athlete endorser was not a runner or a basketball player but the tennis player Ilie Nastase, which is a useful reminder that the brand's white leather instincts predate its street reputation. Gym Red on white is the purest expression of that inheritance: a clean white leather body with one saturated red on the Swoosh, toe overlay, eyestay and heel. Retro in the name signals a return to the original proportions rather than a modernised interpretation, which matters on a shoe where a few millimetres of panel shape change the entire stance. There is no concept here, no collaborator and no story to explain. It is the Dunk Low doing precisely what it was drawn to do.
Two combinations. The default: mid or dark wash straight leg denim with a white tee and white crew socks, which is the fit this shoe was effectively designed for and needs no thought. Or sharpen it: black trousers with a white shirt and a red detail somewhere small, a cap or a watch strap, so the shoe reads as part of a plan. Works for everyday wear, weekends, casual offices, travel and evenings. True to size with a snug instep that eases after a week. Care is the real cost of ownership: wipe the white leather after every wear, treat scuffs before they set, keep the pair away from wet dark denim, and never soak them, since red dye can migrate when wet.
White and red is the palette that made basketball footwear legible from the back row, and Nike's court shoes carried it into everyday dress as they became status objects in urban and hip hop fashion through the 1980s and casual staples in the decades after. This is the version of the Dunk that gets photographed most and worn hardest, because it goes with everything and dates never. Simple retro colourways are also the honest measure of a silhouette. Strip away collaborations, prints and special editions and what remains is proportion and panel geometry, and the Dunk Low survives that test better than almost anything else Nike makes.
White leather body with gym red overlays on a rubber cupsole. Gym red is a true, slightly warm red without the orange of scarlet or the blue of crimson, which is why it looks correct against pure white rather than fighting it. The retro build follows the original panel geometry, so the Swoosh sits long and low and the toe overlay carries a generous curve. Standard Dunk internals apply: stitched overlays, padded collar, flat woven laces, foam sockliner and the flat waffle descended tread. Red on white is the highest maintenance combination in the range, because scuffs on white are obvious and red leather can transfer colour onto adjacent white panels if the shoe gets properly soaked.
