Released on 1 May 2023 and part of the Challenger ATR 7 line. This release has a mesh upper in Passion Fruit/Golden Yellow. Passion Fruit with Golden Yellow is the Challenger 7 at its most tropical, a hot pink leaning coral set against a saturated yellow, and it is one of the clearest reminders of where Hoka came from. The brand launched in 2009 in Annecy, France, built by two former Salomon employees who wanted to run downhill faster and were happy to look strange doing it, at a moment when everyone else was chasing minimal shoes. The Challenger is the all terrain member of the family, made to leave the road and keep going. Dressed in fruit colours, it stops pretending to be a technical tool and becomes something you pick because it looks like summer.
Recipe one, running kit: black shorts and a black vest, so the Passion Fruit and Golden Yellow act as your only colour and stay visible in low light. Recipe two, weekend: light denim shorts or off white linen trousers with a plain white tee, keeping every other piece neutral because this shoe cannot share a fit with another loud colour. It is right for gravel, park trails, coastal paths and hot weather travel. Size true, and pull the midfoot lacing snug before any real descent. Protect the upper before first wear, clean marks the same day, and let the pair dry naturally rather than near a heater.
Trail racing is where Hoka's argument was settled. The cushioning advantage on long mountain descents made the brand a mainstay at Western States and UTMB, and it later became UTMB's title sponsor. Jim Walmsley, the sponsored athlete signed after his 2016 Western States run, is a multiple Western States champion and in 2023 became the first American man to win UTMB, setting a course record. Bright colourways like this one belong to the parallel story: the brand's move into fashion, where the maximal silhouette became running's chunky sneaker and partners including Brain Dead, BEAMS and Bodega started reinterpreting Hoka shapes for a non racing audience.
The all terrain build has to solve two problems at once: enough tread to hold loose ground, enough midsole to keep tarmac from beating you up. Hoka's house geometry, a low heel to toe drop under a rounded sole, keeps momentum moving forward when the surface underfoot keeps changing. The heel sits cradled inside the midsole walls, which is how the brand gets steadiness without stiffening the shoe. The Passion Fruit upper carries the Golden Yellow through the branding and sidewall, so the pair reads bright from every angle. Rinse grit out of the outsole while it is still wet, clean the upper with mild soap and a soft brush, and dry it in shade so the bright tones do not fade unevenly.
