Released on 18 March 2024 and part of the Hopara Sandal line. This release has a knit upper in Shifting Sand/Dune. Shifting Sand puts the Hopara 2 in exactly the environment its predecessor was built for. The Hopara is Hoka's terrain and water ready slip on, the model streetwear label Brain Dead chose to rework, and the second version continues a line that has always sat slightly outside the running catalogue. A pale sand tone reads as coastline and dry riverbed rather than road, which is honest for a sandal that expects to get wet. Behind it is the same founding logic from Annecy in 2009: put more cushion under the foot than anyone thinks is reasonable, then find out where else that turns out to help.
Two ways to wear it. First, on the water: swim shorts or technical shorts, a light shirt, bare feet, worn for beach days, river crossings, boats and campsites where you expect to be wet and back on stone within minutes. Second, in town: sand or olive wide leg trousers with a cropped hem and a white tee, the sandal reading as the utilitarian detail. A thin technical sock is fair game in cooler weather. Rinse in fresh water after salt or silt, dry fully in shade before storing, and keep it away from direct heat so the platform does not distort.
The Hopara's cultural life happened outside running. Brain Dead built its own version of the slip on, BEAMS reworked the Tor Ultra, Bodega produced a boutique release, and designer Nicole McLaughlin pushed the idea furthest with the Mafate Three2, pairing a Vibram sole unit with a four in one gaiter system in a High Risk yellow and red colourway. That is the world an outdoor sandal from this brand now belongs to: technical shapes adopted by people who liked them precisely because they were engineered for a purpose rather than drawn for a shelf.
A sandal built for rough and wet ground has a harder job than a slide, because it has to hold the foot through movement without a laced upper, drain properly and survive grit. Hoka's contribution is the platform, designed around a low weight to cushion ratio so a thick sole does not become dead weight when it is soaked. Shifting Sand is the pragmatic choice for that use, since pale earth tones hide dust and dry sand far better than they hide mud. Rinse it after any exposure to salt or silt, because trapped grit is what wears both the footbed and the sides of your foot.
