Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 January 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Phantom/Coconut Milk/Amber Brown/Light Armory Blue. The Air Jordan 1 reached the public on 1 April 1985, built to sell a rookie's identity rather than a superstar's: Nike had signed Michael Jordan on 26 October 1984 because it was losing basketball to Converse and adidas and needed a face of its own. Peter Moore drew the shoe with Bruce Kilgore, and the first 50,000 pairs sold out. Four decades on, the same last carries treatments that have nothing to do with hardwood. This Sashiko low takes the running-stitch language of Japanese mending craft and lays it across the panels, then drops the ankle collar entirely. Cut in grade school sizing, it is the version of the origin story a younger wearer meets first, delivered as a texture study instead of a team colourway.
The neutral Sashiko upper wants clothes that let the stitch read. Try loose carpenter denim cropped just above the collar with a heavyweight cotton crew and a canvas tote, so the texture sits in a plain frame. Or go the other way: pleated wide trousers, a knitted polo and a light overshirt for something closer to smart casual. Low tops in grade school sizing tend to run true but shallow, so try them with the socks that will actually be worn. Keep them off wet ground: raised stitching traps grit and dark water marks are hard to lift. Brush dry with a soft nylon brush along the stitch direction, spot clean with a barely damp cloth and let them air dry away from radiators.
The Air Jordan 1 is the shoe that turned sneaker collecting into a mass activity, and the culture around it came from the collision of basketball and hip hop. Nike put the line into film language through Spike Lee's advertising, with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, while rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z name-checked Jordan and his sneakers. The Banned campaign, built on the NBA's rule that shoes be at least 51 percent white and Nike's willingness to pay the fine, taught the market that transgression sells. A craft-textile version like this one shows how far the silhouette has travelled: the shape is famous enough to survive being handed to a stitching tradition.
The low cut ends below the ankle bone, so the shoe reads as panels and stitching rather than collar and strap. The Sashiko treatment is the point: visible running-stitch detail worked across the toe, quarter and heel blocks, which changes how light sits on the upper compared with a plain leather Jordan 1. Underneath sits the familiar rubber cupsole and the Wings mark that dates the earliest era of the line. Style code FZ5046 041 places it in grade school sizing, which means a narrower volume and a lighter build than the adult pair. Expect the stitch texture to soften and fuzz slightly with wear, which is the honest behaviour of a thread-led upper rather than a flaw.
