Midnight Navy sits on the fourth model, the shoe from the era when Tinker Hatfield had taken the line over and turned a basketball shoe into a design series with its own vocabulary. From the third model onward each release carried recognisable codes rather than just a new colour, and the fourth is the one that made the line look engineered: visible hardware, structured panelling, a stance that reads technical from across a room. Navy is the version of that where the engineering shows and the colour does not fight it. Deep blue on a light midsole keeps the panel geometry legible, which matters more on this model than on the first, because the fourth is built from more pieces and each one wants to be seen.
Recipe one, workwear: navy against ecru, so a pair of cream carpenter trousers, a navy crewneck and a tan jacket, with the shoe grounding the bottom of the outfit. Recipe two, dark denim and grey: indigo jeans with a stack over the collar, a grey hoodie and a black overshirt, keeping the light midsole as the only bright element. Occasion is daily and cold weather; the fourth model has more coverage than a low, so it handles wind better. Fit is standard length with a roomy toe box; lace through the upper eyelets for lockdown. Care: keep the light midsole clean early, store cool and dry, and check older stock for midsole crumbling before you plan a full day in them.
The fourth model belongs to the stretch where Air Jordan became a cultural object rather than sports equipment, carried by Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising and by rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z. It is also one of the three silhouettes Travis Scott has worked on under Cactus Jack, alongside the 1 and the 6, which is why the model holds attention in the resale market the brand anchors, valued at roughly two billion dollars. In a navy colourway you get the shape everyone recognises without the noise of a collaboration release, which is generally the better way to actually wear it.
A navy upper with contrast panelling and a light midsole and outsole, built on the fourth model's structured eyelet hardware, which routes the lacing away from the upper and lets you tune tightness zone by zone.
