Released on 19 September 2023 and part of the Jordan Nu Retro 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Varsity Red/Black/White. Chicago is the colour story Air Jordan is built on: red, black and white, the palette of the team Nike signed a rookie out of on 26 October 1984 with a six year deal worth 2.5 million dollars and a royalty on every pair sold. Those three colours now function as brand colours in their own right, independent of the franchise. The Nu Retro 1 Low is not a straight reissue of Peter Moore's 1985 design, it is a reworked take on the low cut 1 that keeps the recognisable panel language while changing how the shoe is put together. Putting Chicago on a reworked platform is a deliberate provocation: the most sacred colourway in the catalogue, applied to a version that refuses to be an OG.
Two recipes. First, plain black trousers and a white tee, letting the red do everything and keeping the rest of the outfit out of the way. Second, mid wash denim with a red detail somewhere high, a cap or a collar, so the colour bookends you rather than pooling at the floor. Lows work with no show socks and warm weather, and they suit a wider foot than the high does. Size true to length. Protect the white leather before the first wear, wipe after every outing rather than saving it up, and never put a red and white pair anywhere near a washing machine.
Air Jordan created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, and original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX inside a resale market valued at roughly two billion dollars. Chicago sits at the very centre of that economy, which is why applying it to a non OG platform reads as an argument rather than a colourway. Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising and the run of hip hop references from 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z built the recognition that makes those three colours legible to people who have never watched a game. This is a shoe that gets identified across a street.
Because this is a Nu Retro rather than a Retro, treat it as its own build rather than a faithful reproduction of the original tooling, and judge it on how it wears rather than on how closely it matches an archive pair. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the line since the second model. The Chicago block puts red directly against white, which is the hardest combination in the catalogue to keep clean, because dye transfer and grime both show immediately at the seam. Clean white panels first with a separate cloth, never let the shoe dry with a wet red panel pressed against white, and keep it out of long direct sun so the red does not go pink at the toe.
