Released on 2 November 2023 and part of the Jordan Zion 3 line. This release has a textile upper in White/University Red/Cement Grey/Pure Platinum/Black. Zion Williamson is a signature NBA athlete for Jordan Brand, the top tier of the relationship the brand grants, and the third shoe under his name is a serious performance product rather than a lifestyle release. Fresh Paint is a colourway name that fits the player: heavy, expressive, not subtle. Signature lines outside Jordan's own only became possible after 1997, when the series was restructured as a standalone Nike division with its own athlete roster, apparel and collaborations. Before that the brand was one man's shoe. Now the model that Nike invented in October 1984, buying a young player's identity before he was proven, runs in parallel across a full roster.
This is a playing shoe. Recipe one: on court, compression tights under shorts, a fitted jersey, a low performance sock, and full lacing, which is the fit the knit was designed around. Recipe two: off court, black tech trousers with a tapered hem, a plain crew, and a coach jacket, since a bulky performance silhouette wants a slim leg above it. Buy true to length and snug in width, because a knit upper stretches across but not along. Never machine wash it. Brush dust off dry, spot clean with mild soap, and let it dry fully between sessions so the foam and the knit both recover.
Signature shoes are how Jordan Brand keeps its position on court while the archive sells everywhere else. A shoe built for a player of Zion's size has to solve containment first. Since the thirtieth model the line has used Flyknit uppers, which allow a single knit to be engineered tight where the foot needs holding and soft where it needs to flex, and the line has long used carbon fibre shank plates for torsional stiffness so the shoe does not twist when you plant and turn. That combination is what a modern signature basketball shoe is: a knit that wraps and a plate that refuses. Expect a snug fit that relaxes slightly and then stabilises. Lace fully to the top eyelet for play, and use a proper performance sock rather than a thick casual one.
