Kodak released the Fling in 1987, its first single use camera, a yellow plastic brick you shot once and handed over at a lab counter. The Charmera is that object shrunk onto a keyring and made digital. RETO Production builds it under Kodak licence, the same outfit behind the Ektar H35 half frame film camera, and it went on sale on September 10, 2025 after an announcement a week earlier. The yellow design in the lineup is a direct nod to the original Fling. What made it detonate was the packaging: it ships blind, six standard designs plus a secret seventh in a transparent shell that shows the internals off. It sold out twice inside 24 hours, restocked, sold out again, and Kodak never posted about it on its own main feed.
Buy it as a keychain first and a camera second. Clip it to a bag strap or a belt loop and 30 grams disappears, then shoot on impulse at a house party, a concert, a trip, the moments a phone makes everyone self conscious. It is fixed focus, so bright daylight is where it looks best and motion blur is real if you or your subject moves. Pair it with a 32GB microSD rather than a 128GB one, because 1.6 megapixel files are tiny and the camera gains nothing from the extra speed. Buy that card separately, it is not included. One quirk to know before you gift it: you have to reselect photo or video mode every time it powers on. Charge over USB-C and treat scratches as patina.
This is what happens when a camera is designed as a charm first. It rode four obsessions at once, retro nostalgia, deliberately low quality photos, mystery box collecting and the keychain accessory wave, and it did it without a single main feed post from Kodak. Momentum came entirely from user generated content, to the point that people were irritated it had sold out before they had heard of it, which only sharpened the want. The pull odds are one in six for each standard design and one in forty eight for the secret transparent edition, which turns a thirty dollar camera into a lottery ticket. Resellers pushed eBay listings past three times retail during the first shortage.
Inside sits a quarter inch CMOS sensor rated at 1.6 megapixels, shooting 1440 by 1080 JPEGs through a fixed 35mm equivalent f/2.4 lens. That is the intent, not a shortfall: soft detail and muted dynamic range hand you the grain and colour drift people pay apps to fake. Video runs 1080p AVI at 30 fps with no stabilisation. Seven filters and four frames stack into twelve looks baked in at capture. There is an LED flash, an optical viewfinder and a 0.8 inch live preview. A 200mAh battery charges over USB-C. The body measures 58 by 24.5 by 20 mm and weighs about 30 grams, and it takes a microSD card up to 128GB, which is not in the box.
