Designed by Charlotte Lee and released on 4 December 2024 as part of New Balance's 1906L line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Blacktop/Phantom. Blacktop and Phantom is a colourway named after road surfaces and ghosts, which tells you the ambition here is to disappear. The 1906 line carries the founding year of the company in its name, from 1906 when William J Riley began making arch supports outside Boston, and the L is its everyday branch, the version that trades athletic signalling for wearability. A near black upper broken by a smoky phantom grey gives the shoe two tones that barely separate, so the panelling emerges only in certain light. That restraint is native to New Balance. This was a company of six employees making about thirty pairs a day when Jim Davis bought it in 1972, and it has never been comfortable shouting.
Two dark tones make this the most versatile pair in the range. Recipe one: black trousers with a charcoal knit and a black jacket, a tonal outfit where the phantom grey stops the whole thing going flat. Recipe two: dark indigo jeans, a grey sweatshirt, and a black cap, casual but not sloppy, with the shoe grounding the bottom. This is one of the few pairs here that passes in a smart casual office. Dust is the enemy on dark textile, so brush after each wear and keep a damp cloth for the midsole. Size with the sock you plan to wear and use the width fittings if the midfoot feels tight.
New Balance has stayed privately held under Jim Davis since 1972, and that independence shows in how slowly its design language moves. The 990 family drifted into culture as the archetypal American dad shoe without any campaign pushing it, worn for comfort rather than status, and normcore later reclaimed that plainness as a deliberate position before high fashion followed. A blacked out everyday shoe on a technical chassis is the logical endpoint of that history: all the engineering the brand is known for, none of the visual noise. It belongs to people who want a shoe that behaves well and never becomes a conversation topic.
Two dark tones layered over a running derived chassis, with blacktop carrying the base and phantom grey lifting the overlays just enough to show the shoe's structure. Working in a narrow tonal band means the materials themselves become the contrast: matte textile against slightly glossier synthetic, mesh against smooth panels. ABZORB handles the cushioning, New Balance's proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend built to disperse heel strike impact before it travels up into the knees and hips, softer and lighter than ENCAP, the polyurethane rim around an EVA core that gives the 990 its planted feel. Dark shoes hide scuffs and show dust, so a brush matters more than a cleaner. Width fittings are available, as across the range.
