Released on 9 October 2024 and part of New Balance's 1906 line. This release has a mesh upper in Concrete/Silver Metallic/Brighton Grey. The 1906A is the sharper, more angular reading of the 1906 idea, and Concrete Silver Metallic is the colourway that commits hardest to it. Everything about the palette is architectural: a grey base named after a building material, lifted by metallic panels that catch light the way polished steel does. The number refers to 1906, the year New Balance opened near Boston as the New Balance Arch Support Company, making arch supports rather than shoes. Using that founding date on the brand's most futuristic shapes is a deliberate joke about continuity. The company's oldest promise, fit and support, sits under a shoe designed to look like it came from a much later century.
Utility
Industrial greys want technical clothing. Recipe one: black nylon trousers, a grey technical shell and a black tee, a hard edged city outfit where the metallic panels are the only shine. Recipe two: mid grey wide leg trousers, a white tee and a denim jacket, a softer build that keeps the shoe from reading as costume. Best for dry city days, travel and evenings, and not built for rain since metallic finishes dull and grey shows water marks. Confirm your width fitting. Wipe metallic panels with a soft dry cloth, brush textile sections, avoid abrasive cleaners entirely, and dry at room temperature away from direct heat.
Influence
New Balance's futuristic shapes only work because the brand's plain ones came first. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort rather than status, and normcore and then high fashion reclaimed that plainness in the 2010s. That reappraisal gave New Balance permission to be strange, to redraw its running archive into new silhouettes rather than reissuing it faithfully. The 1906A is the sharp end of that permission. Since April 2021, when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis became creative director of Made in USA, the archive as fashion line has been official policy, and shoes like this are the experimental wing of the same project.
Construction
Metallic and concrete grey work as a pair because they behave differently under the same light: the grey stays flat and structural while the metallic sections move and shift as you walk, which makes the shoe's panelling legible without any colour contrast. The block N sits on the side wall as the constant. New Balance's cushioning heritage frames what you get underfoot, ENCAP layering a moulded polyurethane rim around a soft EVA core for structure, durability and low compression set, and ABZORB delivering softer impact dispersal as a foam and rubber polymer blend. Multiple width fittings remain available across the line, and a technical shape like this shows a poor fit quickly.
