Released on 8 August 2025 and part of New Balance's 1906 line. This release has a mesh upper in Earth Shadow/Flat Taupe/Bisque. The 1906R is New Balance mining its early 2000s performance running era, the moment when running shoes looked engineered rather than casual, and reissuing that language for people who now wear it standing still. Earth Shadow Flat Taupe sets the model in muted brown-grey tones that soften all that technical geometry, so the shoe reads like a piece of equipment left out in the sun. That instinct for understatement is native to the brand. New Balance built its reputation on fit and support rather than spectacle, having started in 1906 as the New Balance Arch Support Company, and its most beloved shoes have almost always been the ones that avoided shouting about themselves.
Utility
Taupe is the most flexible neutral in the brown family, so use it as a bridge. Recipe one is earth-toned utility: brown carpenter trousers, a cream long sleeve, an olive shell jacket, letting the shoe tie the browns and greens together. Construction
Earth Shadow and Flat Taupe work as a layered neutral, which suits a busy technical upper because the panelling, mesh sections and overlay stitching separate by tone rather than fighting each other. Silver or metallic detailing usually anchors this model, and here the muted browns pull that hardware down into the palette. The block N sits on the side wall as always. Underneath, New Balance's midsole approach is the reason the era is worth reissuing: ENCAP wraps a soft EVA core in a polyurethane rim so structure and cushioning coexist, and ABZORB is the softer foam and rubber blend designed to disperse heel strike.
