Released on 13 August 2021 and part of New Balance's 2002R line. This release has a suede upper in Phantom/Magnet. Phantom is the Protection Pack 2002R in its most severe register. The 2002 was a top tier New Balance runner, engineered in the period when the brand's technical shoes carried real ambition, and the 2002R brought that shape back for the street. The Protection Pack strips the upper to a raw, weathered character rather than a polished one, and Phantom keeps the whole thing in low, dark, near black tones so the shoe reads as an object rather than as a colourway. There is a logic to a brand this unfussy making a deliberately unpretty shoe. New Balance has been privately held since Jim Davis bought it in 1972 and has never needed to make anything look expensive to make it desirable.
Keep the outfit dark and heavy: black or charcoal wide trousers, a black hooded layer, an overcoat if the weather allows, so the shoe disappears into the silhouette and only the texture registers. The second recipe adds one contrast, raw indigo denim with a grey marl sweat, which lets the dark shoe ground a plainer fit. This is a long day city shoe and a strong travel option, not a gym shoe. Brush the suede in one direction to keep the nap even, avoid wet cleaning on the mesh, and dry it away from direct heat. A dark suede refresher will bring the tone back after a few months of wear.
The Protection Pack sits at the end of a long arc where New Balance's plainness became a design position. The 990 family had already turned into the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort rather than status, with documented wearers including Steve Jobs, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and normcore then high fashion reclaimed that in the 2010s. Once the ordinary version was fashion, the interesting move was to make the shoe look used before you bought it. That instinct matches New Balance's collaborator roster, which favours designers and independents such as Paul Smith on a 576 in June 2018 and Action Bronson across several models, over mass celebrity endorsement.
The upper combines engineered mesh with suede and synthetic overlays in the standard 2002R layering, worked here in dark phantom tones so the panelling reads as texture and shadow instead of colour. ABZORB carries the cushioning here, the proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend New Balance uses to break up heel strike before the load reaches your joints. ABZORB is plusher and lighter than ENCAP and less structurally supportive, so this is a cushioned street shoe and not a stability runner. A segmented rubber outsole handles flex. The dark palette is the practical choice of the Protection Pack colours, because the stripped upper picks up marks readily and Phantom absorbs them where a light build would show every one.
