Released on 26 July 2023 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a suede upper in Black/Sea Salt/Brighton Grey. The 9060 is New Balance's Frankenstein, and that is a compliment. James Lee and Yue Wu started drawing it in late 2019 and shipped it in 2022, welding the 99X series to the 860v2, which is literally where the name comes from. Sway Bars lifted off the 990, a tongue patch shaped after the 991 ABZORB badge, an oversized CR device at the heel: everything on it is quoted from the archive and then blown out of proportion. The Black Suede version, style code U9060HSD, landed on 26 July 2023 at 160 dollars in a Black, Sea Salt and Brighton Grey mix. It is the pair that answered the one real complaint about the 9060, that it shouted too loudly, by going almost entirely dark.
Two ways to run it. One: black wide-leg cargos or baggy denim with a grey heavyweight hoodie, letting the Sea Salt and Brighton Grey tones break up the black instead of adding a third colour. Two: pleated dark trousers with a boxy overshirt, where the sculpted midsole does the talking and the shaggy suede reads as texture rather than sportswear. On fit, the New Balance 9060 comes in true to size, but the toebox measures narrower than the bulky exterior suggests, so wide feet should try a pair on before buying. It is heavy at roughly 427 g a shoe, which is fine for long walking days and wrong for actually running. For care, use a suede brush dry, hit it with a protector spray before first wear, and never soak the shaggy suede, since water flattens the nap permanently.
The 9060 pulled off something New Balance had not managed in years: it made a chunky runner desirable to people who were never going to wear a 990. Y2K retrofuturism, exaggerated proportions, a shape that reads as an alternative to the Yeezy 500 without any of the baggage attached to it. Black Suede is the makeup that turned all of that wearable. Where Beef and Broccoli and the Bodega collabs are conversation pieces, this one just goes on and works, which makes it the sane pick anywhere a pale pair would be finished inside a week. Wear it with volume in the leg and it looks deliberate; wear it with anything slim and the proportions fight you, so pick a side before you buy.
Open mesh handles the airflow, and shaggy suede overlays sit on top of it, a napped, slightly furry finish that catches light differently panel to panel so a near-black shoe never reads flat. Leather overlays reinforce the forefoot, the side logos and the heel, where the NB branding is embroidered rather than printed, so it will not crack or peel. The midsole is sculpted into arcing ABZORB pods with ABZORB SBS at the heel for stability, a dual-density build pairing a soft inner foam with a firmer outer wall. Lab measurement puts the heel at 37.3 mm and the forefoot at 26 mm, so you are standing on real stack. The diamond-pattern outsole is a straight 860 reference and grips hard for how thin it is.
