Part of New Balance's 327 line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Black. The 327 is the one modern New Balance that is openly a design exercise rather than a revived runner. It takes the visual cues of the brand's older racing shoes, the flared outsole and the low slung profile, and blows the block N up until it runs across most of the side wall. The block N is the house mark, so making it the entire shoe is a statement about how confident the brand had become in its own identity. In black, that confidence gets quiet. You keep the exaggerated proportions and the oversized logo but lose the contrast, which turns a loud silhouette into something you can wear without thinking about it.
In black it is the easiest 327 to place. Wear it with black or charcoal tapered trousers cropped at the ankle and a black knit, so the flared outsole reads as the only shape in the outfit. The second recipe uses contrast: raw indigo denim with a white tee and a grey overshirt, where the shoe grounds a light fit without adding noise. This is a flat, low shoe for city days, cafes and evenings rather than long walking or training. Brush the suede in one direction to keep the nap, clean the outsole sidewall with a damp cloth because it collects road film, and keep it away from standing water.
The 327 exists because New Balance stopped apologising for looking like New Balance. The 990 family had already become the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort rather than status, and normcore then high fashion reclaimed that plainness through the 2010s until the brand's own visual language, block N and all, became the asset. The 327 is the design department answering that with an intentionally graphic shoe. It fits the brand's collaborator sensibility too, which favours designers and independents like Paul Smith on a 576 in June 2018 rather than mass celebrity endorsement.
The upper combines suede and mesh with synthetic panels, cut so the oversized N is a structural piece rather than a print, and worked here in black across every surface so the logo reads through texture instead of colour. The outsole flares out beyond the upper at the heel, wrapping up the sides, which is where the 327 gets its stance and its grip on a flat pavement. There is no bulky cushioning platform under this shoe. It sits low and firm compared with the brand's ABZORB and ENCAP runners, so treat it as a flat everyday sneaker rather than a comfort shoe. Width fittings are New Balance's oldest promise and worth using, since the low profile does not hide a wide foot.
