Released on 1 July 2022 and part of New Balance's 550 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Castlerock. White Castlerock is the 550 doing the thing it does best: white leather with one grey to break it up. The 550 is New Balance's basketball silhouette, a low, hard edged court shoe from a part of the archive most people did not associate with the brand at all, and its return worked because it looks nothing like a New Balance runner. No mesh, no visible foam, no engineered panelling. Castlerock is one of the brand's own grey names, so even the accent comes from in house vocabulary. The result is the most straightforward white leather sneaker New Balance sells, with a court shape underneath rather than a tennis one.
Denim is the natural partner: mid or dark wash straight leg jeans with a white tee and a grey overshirt, so the Castlerock accent has something to talk to. The second recipe is sharper, grey tailored trousers with a white shirt and a clean ankle break, where the 550 works as a low profile alternative to a dress sneaker. This is an all day city shoe, firm underfoot, better for standing and short walks than for long distance. Leather is the easy material: wipe with a barely damp cloth, clean the midsole with mild soap and a soft brush, condition twice a year and avoid heavy rain.
New Balance sponsors the NBA and signed Kawhi Leonard, whose OMN1S signature shoe launched in February 2019, so the basketball connection is real rather than borrowed. The 550's audience, though, arrived through the fashion reclamation of the brand. Once normcore and then high fashion turned New Balance's ordinariness into a design position through the 2010s, a forgotten white leather court shoe became the most useful object in the archive. White with a grey accent is the version that asks least of the wearer, which is why it became a default rather than a statement.
The upper is leather led and panelled in the court manner, perforated across the toe for airflow, with a stitched block N on the side wall and Castlerock grey picked out on the overlays and the logo against a white base. Underneath is a cupsole rather than a cushioned running platform, so the ride is flat, firm and stable, a completely different proposition to the ABZORB and ENCAP midsoles the brand uses on its runners. Leather creases across the toe box rather than fraying and holds structure through the midfoot. New Balance's width fittings are its oldest technical promise, and leather will soften with wear but will not create volume it did not start with.
