Released on 16 February 2023 and part of New Balance's 574 line. This release has a suede upper in Steel Blue/Grey. The 574 is the New Balance everyone recognises, the model that became the volume seller by refusing to specialise, and it sits on ENCAP, the midsole the brand introduced with the 995 in 1986 and still uses on the 574 and the 990. Handing that shoe to Stone Island is a meeting of two very different kinds of technical obsession: one built on fit, widths and midsole engineering, the other on fabric and finishing. Steel blue is the colour that makes the point without shouting it, a cold industrial tone that belongs equally to a running archive and to a design house that treats material as the entire subject.
Cold steel blue is easier to wear than a bright colour and more interesting than grey, so use it as the accent in a neutral fit. First recipe: charcoal wide leg trousers with a grey knit, where the blue is the only shift in temperature. Second: black technical trousers with a black overshirt, letting the shoe be the single point of colour in a utility fit. It handles walking, travel and daily wear, and dislikes rain the way all suede does. Sizing runs true with widths available, so fix a broad foot with width. Protect the suede before first wear, brush the nap dry in one direction, and clean the midsole before grime sets.
New Balance's collaboration programme is built on designers and independents rather than mass celebrity, with British designer Paul Smith on a 576 in June 2018 and Action Bronson across several models among the named partners. The pattern is consistent: the brand hands over a familiar silhouette and lets someone with a specific point of view work on the surface, rather than redesigning the shoe to chase a name. That is only possible because the underlying models are strong enough to survive interpretation. A 574 in a collaborator's hands is the clearest version of the arrangement, since it is the shoe with the least to prove.
A 574 upper in suede and mesh, worked in steel blue with the block N on the side wall, where a collaboration's value shows in the material and finishing choices rather than in the silhouette, since the silhouette is deliberately unchanged. Underneath sits ENCAP: a moulded polyurethane rim encapsulating a soft EVA core, so the polyurethane supplies structure, durability and low compression set while the EVA absorbs shock. That is why the 574 stays comfortable through a whole day on hard floors instead of only feeling good early. New Balance's multiple width fittings, inherited from the arch support business it began as in 1906, are worth using on a pair you intend to keep.
