Released on 19 April 2021 and part of New Balance's 574 line. This release has a suede upper in Timberwolf/Grey Oak. Timberwolf Grey Oak is the 574 dressed in the palette New Balance keeps returning to, the muted earth range that sits next to grey without competing with it. The 574 descends from a company that started in 1906 making arch supports, not shoes, and built its reputation on fit and support before it ever built one on style. That orthopaedic beginning still explains why the model has a wide, flat, forgiving shape rather than a sculpted one. This colourway leans into the plainness instead of hiding it: a warm greyish brown across the suede with oak toned overlays, closer to workwear than to sportswear, and closer to a walking shoe than to anything that wants attention.
Timberwolf is a bridge colour, which makes this the easiest brown shoe to slot into a wardrobe that is mostly navy and grey. First recipe: olive fatigue trousers, a cream heavy tee and a brown waxed jacket, the whole thing built from earth tones with the oak accents tying it. Second: mid wash denim with a navy overshirt, where the warm suede stops the outfit going cold. Wear them for long walking days rather than long standing days, since the ENCAP platform is supportive but firm. Buy the correct width rather than sizing up. Brush the suede with a crepe brush after dusty wear, and treat with a suede protector before the first outing to slow the toe from lightening.
New Balance's cultural life has been mostly accidental, and the 574 is the plainest evidence. The brand's identity was built on domestic manufacturing and technical fit, the two things its competitors dropped, which produced shoes chosen for comfort rather than status. Grey New Balance became the archetypal American dad shoe, and the 2010s reclaimed that plainness as a design position rather than a failure of ambition. Earth toned 574s belong to the quieter end of that, closer to the model's long life inside amateur running culture and the brand's New York Road Runners sponsorship than to any red carpet. Nobody needs to have worn this colourway for it to make sense.
Suede and mesh panels in timberwolf with grey oak accents and a tonal block N on the side wall. The midsole is ENCAP, the moulded polyurethane rim around a soft EVA core that New Balance introduced with the 995 in 1986 and still runs under the 574. Polyurethane is heavier than foam but it resists compression set, meaning the shoe holds its shape and support far longer than a soft midsole would, while the EVA core inside handles shock. Warm brown suede is more forgiving than black or white in daily wear, hiding dust and scuffing, though it will lighten where it creases across the toe. That patina is part of how the model ages rather than a fault in it.
