The 740 sits in the part of the New Balance archive that never got famous, a cushioned runner from the era when the company was still building shoes to be run in rather than photographed. That anonymity makes it a good candidate for a Lunar New Year release, because the design has room to carry a theme without fighting an existing reputation. New Balance has always been a global manufacturer rather than an American one only, with factories in New England and at Flimby in the UK and a business that reaches well beyond its home market, so a shoe built around a celebration observed across Asia is a natural rather than a decorative gesture for it.
