Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 13 September 2022 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Light Green Spark. Nike opened its first retail store in Santa Monica in 1966 and pushed east to Wellesley, Massachusetts in 1967, and the company has been arguing about American cities ever since. The Air Force 1 is the shoe that argument settled on, because it belongs to street level city dress in a way no track shoe does. This is the Off White Brooklyn edition, a borough named release on the most borough specific silhouette Nike makes: the low top white leaning Air Force 1 that has been standard wear on New York pavement for four decades. A collaboration release changes the frame around the shoe but not the shoe itself, and that is the point. The Air Force 1 is the constant everything else gets measured against.
Look one: mid wash loose jeans, a white tee and a heavy zip hoodie, the plain New York uniform the shoe was co written with. Look two: black wide trousers and a workwear jacket in olive or brown, where the pale upper is the only light element and stops the fit going flat. Air Force 1s run large, so consider a half size down. Pale collaboration uppers show dirt in the panel seams first, so brush the seams rather than the flat areas, use a mild solution and never soak the cupsole. If the release includes replacement laces, keep the originals bagged, since resale value on a collaboration lives in completeness.
The Air Force 1 became a status object in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s onward, then a mainstream American youth staple, then a fixture of 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure dress, and New York carried more of that than any other city. Nike understands the borough as a marketing unit because it understood the city as one first, from the Spike Lee directed advertising of the Jordan era onward. A Brooklyn edition trades on the fact that the shoe already meant something specific there before Nike ever printed the name on it. That is the difference between a collaboration that works and one that just adds a logo.
The low top Air Force 1 platform is built on a cupsole with Nike Air sealed inside it, a pressurised gas unit that has been Nike's cushioning language since it became visible on the 1987 Air Max. Above it sits the layered panel upper, perforated across the toe, with the Swoosh stitched rather than bonded. A collaboration build usually changes the material weights and the finishing details rather than the architecture, so the shoe still creases, still sits high off the ground and still runs large on the last. What you should inspect is the panel edge finishing and the stitching density, because on a pale Air Force 1 those two things are the entire difference between a clean pair and a rough one.
