Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 8 June 2022 as part of Nike's Air Max 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Particle Grey/Iron Grey/Dark Smoke Grey/Dark Teal Green. The Air Max arrived in 1987 as the first Nike to admit what was inside it, cutting a window into the midsole so the sealed pressurised gas unit became visible and the cushioning itself became a design feature. The 1 is the original of that idea and the most restrained shoe in the family, which is why collaborators keep choosing it when they want to be taken seriously. This Kasina pair runs Won-Ang Grey, a cool grey scheme from a Korean retailer whose reference points are its own city rather than Oregon. That is the modern arrangement: Nike supplies the chassis and someone else supplies the meaning.
Tonal grey is the most versatile finish here and the one that rewards good fabrics. Recipe one: charcoal wool wide-leg trousers, a white shirt and a grey overcoat, a full tonal outfit where the shoe's texture differences are the only variation. Recipe two: light-wash denim, a navy crewneck and a black harrington, using the grey to bridge the blue and the black. Air Max 1 lasts run slightly narrow in the toe, so consider a half size up. Dry brush the layered panels regularly, spot clean rather than washing since grey shows water rings badly, and protect before wear because a tonal build has nowhere to hide a stain.
Air Max models became staples of mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s and returned through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks, but the 1 developed a second constituency among people who treat sneakers as design objects rather than as sportswear. Retailer collaborations feed that constituency, and Nike has long been comfortable letting partners speak for it, an instinct that goes back to Wieden and Kennedy from 1976, the agency that produced Just Do It. A grey Air Max 1 from a Korean retailer is the current shape of that arrangement, where the story attached to a shoe now comes from the city that made it rather than from Beaverton.
The Air Max 1's construction is a layered upper over an exposed heel Air unit, with a mudguard, quarter panel, eyestay and Swoosh all cut as separate pieces so the shoe reads clearly from the side. Collaborator builds change materials rather than geometry, so expect texture differences between the layers, in this case worked through a grey palette where the only separation between panels is surface rather than colour. That is a much harder brief than a two-tone build. Nike Air sits sealed into the midsole as the underlying cushioning, exposed at the heel as it has been since 1987, and the ride stays firm and low rather than plush.
