Designed by Sergio Lozano and released on 11 July 2025 as part of Nike's Air Max 95 line. This release has a denim upper in Black/Anthracite/Gym Red. The Air Max 95 is the shoe that made cushioning visible in a new place and layered the upper like something anatomical rather than athletic, and putting it in Levis denim changes the material argument entirely. Black denim on the 95's stacked panels reads as heavier and softer than the usual synthetics, and the gradient logic of the silhouette translates into fabric weight instead of colour. Nike Air arrived as a visible design feature on the Air Max in 1987, and everything the line has done since has been about making the cushioning part of the look. In black denim, that idea meets a fabric with a completely different set of rules.
Black denim on the foot wants either matching or full contrast. Head to toe black denim, jacket and jeans, with the shoe as the same fabric at the floor, is the strongest version. The easier route is grey sweatpants and a plain black hoodie, letting the texture do the work up close. Cuff or stack the hem so the layered panelling is visible. Keep them out of heavy rain, because a soaked denim upper on a cushioned midsole takes a long time to dry and can mark. Sizing on the 95 tends true to size with a snug midfoot. Never machine wash them.
Air Max models became staples of mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s onward alongside Air Jordans and Air Force 1s, then reappeared through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure wardrobes, which is how a running shoe ended up carrying more cultural weight than most basketball ones. Nike's position was already dominant by 1980, when it held roughly half the US athletic shoe market and went public, and visible Air is what it spent that position on. Denim is the only fabric in a similar position: universally owned, endlessly reissued, and judged mostly on how it ages.
A denim upper over the Air Max 95 layered panel structure, with a visible Nike Air unit in the midsole: a pressurised gas unit sealed into the sole, which is what made cushioning a design feature rather than a hidden component. Denim behaves nothing like the mesh and synthetic mix the model normally uses. It abrades at the flex points, fades where it creases, and cannot be cleaned aggressively without lifting colour, so brush dry and spot clean only. Black denim will lighten along the toe crease over time, which most owners consider the point. Underfoot expect a soft, tall, forgiving ride compared with any court silhouette.
