Designed by Wilson Smith and part of Nike's Air More Uptempo line. This release has a leather upper in Black/White/Laser Crimson. Nike Air is a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, and from the 1987 Air Max onward the company decided that cushioning should be seen rather than described. The Air More Uptempo is the loudest version of that decision: it takes the word itself and blows it across the side of the shoe until the branding is the design. This pair runs black with white and a laser crimson accent, which keeps the graphic legible at distance while giving it a single hot colour to sit against. It is a basketball shoe from the era when Nike had the market, the athletes and the advertising all at once, and behaved accordingly.
Two builds. Nineties correct: baggy denim or nylon track pants stacked on the collar, an oversized tee, and nothing else competing for attention. Modern: black cargos with a fitted black crew, letting laser crimson be the single accent and pulling it into a cap or a bag. This is a bulky silhouette, so it needs volume elsewhere in the outfit or it looks bottom heavy. Fit is generally true to size with a roomy toe box. Keep the midsole clean from the first week, since the white on this shoe is large enough that once it yellows the whole pair looks tired.
Nike's ownership of basketball culture began with the 1984 Michael Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising, and it continues in the business today: Nike has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017 under a deal signed in June 2015, extended for a further twelve years as announced in October 2024. Through basketball the brand became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, and a shoe that literally spells out its own technology is that confidence in physical form. LeBron James and Kevin Durant carried the signature athlete tradition forward from the same lineage.
Compare that to Flywire, Nike's later approach of holding the foot with cables and almost no upper material, and you can see two opposite philosophies of the same problem. Nothing about this shoe is subtle underfoot either, which is exactly the appeal. Care is mostly about the white: brush the midsole regularly before yellowing sets in, wipe the black panels with a damp cloth, and avoid soaking, because thick foam midsoles hold water for days.
