Origin
Mint Foam and Barely Green is a racing shoe dressed in colours from a completely different world, which is now standard for this category: the fastest shoes Nike makes are also the ones people photograph. Underneath the pastel is the most consequential running technology the brand has produced. ZoomX, Nike's altered Pebax foam, is the lightest and most responsive material in its range, the foam that made the Vaporfly the shoe distance running had to write rules about after it launched in 2017. This is the women's Alphafly Next% 2, the maximal end of that family. It is the direct descendant of a track coach in Oregon deciding, in the 1960s, that American runners deserved something lighter than what they were being sold.
Utility
Two uses only. First, race day: half or full marathon, singlet and split shorts, thin technical socks, laced snug across the midfoot without crushing the instep. Second, race specific workouts: threshold and goal pace sessions in the build up, so your legs adapt to the platform before the start line. Do not use it for easy runs, gym work or daily walking, because you will spend the shoe's fastest miles on runs that gain nothing from it. Size with a thumb width at the toe since feet swell late in a long race. Air after every run, never machine wash, avoid folding the midsole, and store it flat rather than crammed in a bag.
Influence
Foam and plate racing shoes reshaped the sport enough that governing bodies stepped in: World Athletics issued rules on 31 January 2020 capping sole thickness at 40mm, permitting one rigid plate and requiring shoes to be generally available at retail rather than built for a single athlete. Nike's racing platform is why those limits exist. Research on the Vaporfly family found improvements of up to 4.2 percent in marathon performance, which is an enormous number in a sport measured in seconds. Nike's credibility here goes back to Steve Prefontaine, its first track endorser, and continued through sponsored athletes including Allyson Felix, Michael Johnson and Jackie Joyner-Kersee.
Construction
Style code DV9425-300 places it in Nike's green range, which fits the Mint Foam and Barely Green scheme. The midsole runs on ZoomX, an altered Pebax foam developed for racing, chosen because it returns more energy per step than conventional midsole material. The Air Zoom naming ties the platform to Nike Air, the pressurised gas cushioning that has sat under the brand's fast shoes since 1987. The upper is a lightweight woven construction in the Flyknit and Flywire tradition, holding the foot with as little material as possible, because every gram matters over a marathon. Racing foam compresses with mileage, so this is equipment with a finite competitive life, not a shoe to walk in.
