Designed by Bill Bowerman and released on 19 January 2019 as part of Nike's Blazer line. This release has the Habanero Red/Sail-White colourway. The Blazer is one of Nike's earliest basketball shoes, from the era when the company had only just stopped being an importer of Onitsuka Tiger and started making its own line under the Nike name in 1972. The 77 in the title points back to that period, and the Mid 77 is built to look like a survivor rather than a reissue: exposed foam tongue, vintage tinted midsole, a Swoosh that runs almost the full length of the panel. Habanero Red is the colour doing the work here. It is a hot orange leaning red, brighter and more acidic than a team red, and against the aged cream midsole it reads like a shoe that has been sitting in a shop window since the late 1970s and never lost its heat.
First recipe: mid wash loose jeans, a white tee and an olive or tan chore jacket, where Habanero Red becomes the single warm accent in an earth toned outfit. Second recipe: black slim trousers with a black bomber and a grey knit, letting the red Swoosh flash against a dark, tidy silhouette. This red goes with cream, olive, tan, black and grey, and fights with maroon and orange. Blazers run long and narrow, so half a size down is common advice for wide feet, and the mid collar can be worn laced high or with the top loose for a slouchier line. Keep the leather conditioned lightly, clean the aged midsole gently, and accept that the exposed tongue foam will soften and lean forward.
Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s onward, and while Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models led that shift, the Blazer's flat sole made it the shape that skate and art school crowds kept alive instead. It is the Nike silhouette that looks least like a Nike advertisement. The company's own relationship with subculture has had rough edges, including Nike SB's 2005 use of Minor Threat's album art, which drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology. A vintage styled Blazer in a hot red carries none of that weight and all of the shape: the earliest version of the brand, before the technology became the story.
Style code BQ6806 600 sits in the Blazer Mid 77 Vintage family, where the whole design brief is restraint: a mid cut leather panel upper, a soft padded collar, an exposed foam tongue that flattens with wear, and a vulcanised style midsole finished in an aged off white rather than bright white. There is no visible cushioning technology and there is not meant to be, since this is a shape from before Nike Air went visible in 1987. The Habanero Red Swoosh and heel tab sit against white leather, so the leather quality and the stitch lines are what you actually notice. Expect a firm ride and a shoe that creases early, which on a vintage styled Blazer is a feature rather than a fault.
