Designed by Bill Bowerman and released on 22 January 2021 as part of Nike's Blazer line. This release has a leather upper in White/Sail/Black/Pine Green. The Blazer belongs to Nike's loudest era of self identification, when the company had just stopped being an importer and needed everyone to know the mark on the side was its own. The Swoosh, drawn by graphic design student Carolyn Davidson, was first used on 18 June 1971 and registered as a trademark on 22 January 1974, and the Blazer wears it at a scale no other shoe in the line attempts: it runs from the toe to the heel like a signature across a cheque. The Mid 77 revives the taller collar version, and the Vintage designation means the finish is aged on purpose rather than by you. In pine green, the effect is a court shoe that behaves like a heritage garment.
Wear one: brown or ecru wide leg cords with a cream fisherman knit, so the pine green sits in the same earth family as everything else. Wear two: black jeans, a grey sweatshirt and a green flecked beanie, using the shoe as the only saturated point in a grey outfit. Lace the mid collar fully if you want the shoe to stand up, or leave the top two eyelets loose for the slouched look the Vintage finish invites. Sizing runs long on the Blazer last, so half a size down suits narrow feet. Brush the aged panels dry rather than wet, and avoid conditioning products that will bring back a shine the Vintage treatment deliberately removed.
Nike's move from track supplier to cultural object happened when its logo became legible from across a street, and the Blazer is the shoe where that legibility was engineered first. From the 1980s onward, Nike models moved from courts and tracks into urban and hip hop fashion and then into the mainstream casual wardrobes of the 1990s and 2000s, and the mid top court shoe travelled that whole route without ever changing shape. Pine green pushes it further from sport again. It puts the shoe next to workwear and outdoor colour rather than team colour, which is how a basketball silhouette ends up being read as a boot substitute.
The Mid collar is the point of this shoe. It sits above the ankle bone, so the padding is doing real work and the shoe holds its shape standing empty, which is why Blazers crease across the toe rather than collapsing at the heel. The Vintage finish means the materials arrive pre softened and the sidewall detailing reads as worn in, so there is no awkward stage where the shoe looks newer than your clothes. The oversized Swoosh is stitched rather than printed, which is the older way Nike built its house mark into a shoe. Pine green is a deep, low reflectance colour, so the panel edges and stitch lines carry all the visual definition.
