Released on 14 July 2023 and part of the Calm Slide line. This release has a eva upper in Sesame/Sesame. Sesame is the quiet end of the Calm Slide, a soft sand tone that makes a piece of recovery equipment look like a household object. That is the trick with minimal sandals: with no laces, no overlays and no hardware, the colour and the shape are the whole product. Nike arrived here from the opposite direction, starting in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports because Bill Bowerman thought runners deserved lighter shoes than the market offered, and spending sixty years turning athletic function into everyday clothing. A neutral slide is the far end of that journey, a product bought for after the session rather than for it.
Two uses. As recovery wear, put them on straight after training with thick socks and shorts, which is what the wide footbed is built for and where the sock combination stops being a style question. Or as summer wear: light linen trousers or shorts with a white or olive shirt, where the sesame tone sits as a warm neutral against natural fabrics. Do not walk long distances or rough ground in them, since nothing holds the heel. Rinse in cold water after beach use, dry in shade rather than direct sun, and never leave them in a hot car, where moulded foam warps and does not recover.
Slides became everyday footwear when training culture moved into daily dress, the same shift that turned Air Force 1s, Air Max models and Air Jordans into staples of casual and athleisure wardrobes through the 1990s and 2000s. Neutral tones are how that category crossed from locker room to street, because a sand coloured sandal reads as clothing rather than as gear. Nike has always been better than most at that translation, from Just Do It in 1988 giving a sports company a voice outside sport to sportswear becoming default dress. A sesame slide is that idea with nothing left to remove.
A one piece moulded slide with a wide contoured footbed and a broad instep band, designed to be worn barefoot and pulled on without adjustment. The footbed shape is what separates a recovery slide from a beach sandal: it supports underfoot rather than sitting dead flat, which is why it feels better after long hours standing. There are no seams to split and no lining to hold sweat, so the whole thing dries quickly. Sesame is a warm neutral that hides sand and dust well but shows dark marks, so a rinse after outdoor use keeps it looking new. Sizing runs in whole sizes and the heel should sit inside the footbed rather than over its edge.
