One: post gym, black slide over a crew sock with a track pant or leggings, the standard uniform for the walk from studio to car. Two: warm weather, barefoot with a loose dress or wide linen trousers, where a plain black slide reads neutral enough to disappear. It is built for short distances, poolside, hotel corridors and home, not for long walking or wet smooth tile where a moulded sole offers little grip. Size to your usual and prefer snug at the instep. Wash with mild soap and cool water, air dry in shade, and avoid leaving it in a hot car, since heat permanently deforms moulded foam.

Recovery footwear became visible clothing because sportswear became clothing. From the 1980s Nike's shoes moved into urban and hip hop fashion, and the 1990s and 2000s pushed the whole athleisure register, tracksuits, sneakers and slides included, into everyday wardrobes. Just Do It, first aired on 1 July 1988 with 80 year old runner Walt Stack, sold the idea that being active was an identity rather than an activity, which is exactly why the shoes worn between sessions ended up meaning something. Everything happens in the footbed. A one piece moulded foam body gives the slide its contour, cupping the heel and supporting the arch so the foot stays put without a lace or a counter, and the single strap over the instep handles retention. Because there is no lining and no stitched upper, the shoe is effectively waterproof and washable, which is the practical reason slides win over textile sandals. Black hides marks well but shows dust and dried water spots, particularly on a smooth moulded surface. Fit is set by instep volume rather than length, so if you are between sizes the smaller one usually holds better. Rinse after sweaty or salty use so the foam stays soft.
