Designed by Peter Moore and released on 2 December 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Sail/Neptune Green/Grand Purple/Grand Purple. The Swoosh was registered with the US patent office on 22 January 1974, three years after it first appeared on product, and it has been the single most valuable piece of design Nike owns ever since. Almost everything the brand does to a shoe is, at some level, a decision about how to present that mark. This Dunk Low takes the most direct approach available: it turns the Swoosh into a different material entirely. The chenille treatment gives the panel a raised, fuzzy, textile texture against the smooth leather around it, and Grand Purple pushes it into a rich, saturated register that a flat leather Swoosh could never reach. It is a colourway built around one idea, executed on the one part of the shoe everybody looks at first.
Two fits. Play the texture against soft fabrics: grey heavyweight sweatpants with a cream fleece crew, so the chenille reads as part of a family of fuzzy surfaces. Or set it against something hard, black straight leg denim and a leather or coach jacket, where the purple pile becomes the only soft thing in the outfit. Suits weekends, evenings, casual work environments, and any occasion where you want one detail doing the talking. Fit runs true to size with the usual Dunk snugness across the instep. Care is the one thing to take seriously: brush the chenille with a soft dry brush rather than wiping it, never soak the panel, and keep it away from rain since wet pile mats and takes days to recover its texture.
Texture play on the Swoosh is how Nike keeps a forty year old silhouette in conversation without redesigning it. The Dunk earned its cultural position by being a basketball shoe absorbed into urban and hip hop dress in the 1980s and then rebuilt as a casual staple through the 1990s and 2000s, and its current run depends entirely on the brand's willingness to treat the side panel as a canvas. Chenille belongs to a specific aesthetic memory: varsity jackets, letterman patches, collegiate embroidery. Rendering it in Grand Purple rather than a school colour cuts the reference loose from any actual institution, which is the smarter move. You get the collegiate texture without wearing someone else's crest.
Leather panelled low top on a rubber cupsole, with the defining move being the chenille Swoosh: a tufted textile panel with visible pile, which catches light in a completely different way from the surrounding leather and gives the shoe depth at a glance. Grand Purple reads deep and slightly warm, so it sits well against both white and cream leather bodies. Practically, a raised textile Swoosh needs different care from leather. It collects dust in the pile and cannot simply be wiped down. Everything else is standard Dunk: stitched overlays, padded collar, flat laces, and the waffle derived tread pattern under the forefoot that keeps grip predictable on smooth floors. Comfort is good out of the box and improves as the collar softens.
