Designed by Peter Moore and released on 16 December 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper. The Dunk was made for college basketball, which is why its design logic is a two colour system: a base and an overlay, ready to be recoloured for whichever programme was wearing it. Golden Rod is the yellow end of that system, a deep saturated gold over white that has the unmistakable look of a school colourway even when it is sold without a school attached. Nike could afford to build shoes around collegiate loyalty because by 1980 it already held around half the US athletic shoe market and had gone public. Style code DD1391 004 places this in the retro Dunk Low run, the programme that reintroduced these colour pairs to people who never watched the games.
Gold is the loudest thing you will wear, so anchor it: washed black denim, a white tee, a navy jacket. The second route is tonal warmth, with cream trousers and a camel knit, letting the gold sit as the deepest colour in the outfit. Avoid competing brights. The Dunk runs long, so a half size down suits narrow feet, though the forefoot stays wide. White leather at the midsole yellows and scuffs first; clean it with foam cleaner and a soft brush the day it happens, and store the pair out of sunlight, because saturated yellows fade unevenly and there is no way back once they do.
Dunks moved from college gyms into skateboarding and then into the general sneaker conversation, sitting alongside Air Force 1s and Air Max models in the run of Nike shoes that became staples of mainstream American youth dress. Yellow is one of the harder colourways to wear and that has always been part of its appeal: it is a commitment. Nike's whole cultural method has been to make sport specific objects that leak into ordinary dressing, and a gold and white college shoe worn by someone with no connection to the school is that process working exactly as intended.
Two layers of leather, cut into the Dunk's fixed panel map: a base that carries the toe, midfoot and heel, and overlays that run the eyestay, the Swoosh and the heel tab in the contrast colour. That separation is why the Dunk recolours so cleanly. The collar is padded with a low foam roll, the toe box is perforated for airflow and the tongue is thin by modern standards. Underneath sits a rubber cupsole with herringbone tread at the forefoot, a pattern that came from indoor court traction. Gold over white shows every scuff along the midsole, which is part of why this colourway ages so visibly.
