Designed by Peter Moore and released on 29 October 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Iron Grey/Phantom/Scream Green/Ghost Green. The name Nike was coined by an employee, Jeff Johnson, when Blue Ribbon Sports broke from Onitsuka Tiger in 1972 and had to become its own company overnight. That habit of borrowing a good idea from wherever it appears runs through the brand's product calendar too, which is how a basketball silhouette ends up with a Halloween makeup. This Dunk Low takes the seasonal route: a dark base with treatments designed to read differently in low light, built around a holiday that has become a global excuse for costume rather than a strictly American one. Seasonal Dunks are a specific pleasure. They are the releases you buy knowing exactly which few weeks of the year they will get the most attention.
Two ways to use it. On the night: all black, black jeans and a black jacket, so the accent colours are the only visible detail and the shoe carries the whole costume idea without you dressing up. Off season: charcoal or washed grey sweats with an olive or brown jacket, which pulls the palette into autumn territory and stops it reading as a holiday shoe. Suits parties, evenings, gigs and everyday city wear. Fit is true to size with the standard snug instep and a quick break in. Care is easier than on white pairs: wipe the dark leather after wear, use a mild cleaner on the accent panels since bright seasonal colours fade fastest, and dry away from direct heat.
The Dunk earned its position by being a basketball shoe that street culture absorbed. Nike's court models became status objects in urban and hip hop dress through the 1980s and returned as casual staples in the decades after, and by the time the Dunk found its current run, the silhouette had become a canvas the brand could dress for any occasion. Holiday makeups are the least serious end of that and, in practice, some of the most fun. There is no collaborator to credit and no archive story to research. It exists because a shoe this recognisable can be dressed as anything for a night and still be a Dunk in the morning.
A leather panelled Dunk Low on a rubber cupsole with a dark, low light palette. Halloween treatments on Nike footwear generally work through contrast rather than through print: a deep base colour that recedes and accent panels that jump forward under artificial light, so the shoe changes character between daylight and evening. The structural build is the Dunk's usual straightforward one, stitched overlays, a padded collar, flat woven laces, a foam sockliner and the flat waffle derived tread that traces back to Bill Bowerman's rubber experiments. Dark bases are the most practical version of this silhouette to own, since they hide scuffing and city dirt, and they let a seasonal accent colour do all the work without the shoe looking novelty.
