Designed by Peter Moore and released on 3 June 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Varsity Maize/Midnight Navy/White. Maize and blue is one of the few school palettes that is instantly legible without the school's name attached, and on the Dunk it produces the highest contrast pairing in the college range: a warm yellow that pushes forward against a deep blue that pulls back. The model was drawn for exactly this, a base panel and an overlay carrying an allegiance. What makes the Michigan block interesting now is that it left the campus entirely and became a colour combination people wear for its own sake, which is the fate of every successful team colourway and the reason Nike keeps reissuing them.
Yellow and blue is a demanding pair, so keep the rest of the outfit to one colour. Indigo straight leg denim with a white tee lets the maize be the only bright thing. For a colder version, black wide leg trousers with a navy knit, where the yellow reads as a single deliberate flash at the floor. Avoid green or orange anywhere in the outfit. Dry days and daylight, since the yellow panel is unforgiving about mud and rain. Half a size down is the standard correction on this long last. Clean the toe and the midsole line more often than you think you need to.
Nike's basketball authority began in 1984 with the Michael Jordan signing, which turned into a business of its own, and the mythology around it is worth correcting: the NBA did not ban the Air Jordan I. The shoe cited under the league's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship, and Nike paid the fines and built a campaign out of the story. That episode set the template for how basketball footwear gets talked about, where the rules, the colours and the controversy matter as much as the game. College colourways are the amateur half of that same conversation.
A standard Dunk Low: leather base panels, leather overlays carrying the second colour, padded collar and tongue, foam sockliner, and a rubber cupsole with the pivot circle underfoot. High contrast pairs like this one age unevenly, since yellow shows dirt at the toe and along the midsole line long before a dark blue shows anything, so the maintenance job is concentrated in one place. Clean the yellow panels with a soft brush and minimal water, keep dye heavy blue away from pale socks in the first wears, and expect the vamp to crease early and permanently. Flat, firm and low underfoot as always.
