Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Photon Dust/Obsidian/White/Phantom. Photon Dust with Obsidian is the cold, technical end of the Next Nature palette, a pale grey base against a deep navy that reads more like workwear than sportswear. Next Nature is Nike's line for footwear built with a high proportion of content, and it grew out of Nike Grind, the programme that takes manufacturing scrap and worn shoes and puts the material back into new products and surfaces. Running it on the Dunk Low is deliberate, since the Dunk is the shape people actually wear daily. It started in the mid 1980s as a college basketball shoe designed to be recoloured, and a grey and navy scheme is about as close to its original two tone brief as you can get.
Grey and navy is close to a uniform. Wear it with dark indigo straight jeans, a white oxford shirt and a navy jacket for something you could take into most rooms, or with grey sweatpants and a black hoodie where the obsidian panels anchor the outfit. It sits comfortably with black, white, denim and olive. This is a light, flexible everyday walker rather than a training shoe, and it fits true to size. synthetic uppers should not be treated with leather conditioner: use mild soap and a soft brush, air dry away from radiators, and clean the flecked midsole with a magic sponge, which lifts marks without abrading the surface.
Nike's material work spans Nike Grind, the recycling programme feeding scrap back into product, and partnerships such as its 2021 collaboration with Newlight Technologies on AirCarbon bioplastic. Putting that on a Dunk rather than a niche model is the point, because the Dunk is the silhouette that travelled furthest, from college hardwood through skateboarding into general fashion, carried by the credibility Nike built in basketball with the 1984 Michael Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising. A grey and navy sustainable Dunk is the least performative version of a sustainability story: it just looks like a shoe you would wear anyway.
content changes what the upper feels like. Next Nature builds use synthetics across the upper, midsole and outsole, so the panels are lighter and more pliable than leather, they crease more softly, and the midsole often carries visible flecking from the reclaimed material. In photon dust grey that flecking is subtle rather than decorative, and the obsidian panels give the shoe enough contrast to hold its shape visually. The platform is the standard Dunk one: a low profile midsole and a pivot circle rubber outsole for a flat, firm, close to the ground ride. Break in is quicker than a leather Dunk because there is less structure to soften. Fits true to size.
