Released on 31 August 2021 and part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Pink Foam /Dark Beetroot/White. Pink Foam on a grade school Dunk is Nike using a college basketball shoe as a children's colouring book, and that is not a criticism. The Dunk was designed so university programmes could put their own colours on court, which means colour blocking has been its native language since day one. Strip out the institutional loyalty and you are left with a two tone platform that takes any palette convincingly. Pink Foam is a soft, pale pink, warmer than a pastel and cooler than a candy tone, set against white so the shape stays legible. The GS cut makes it lighter and narrower than an adult pair. It is the Dunk at its most straightforwardly likeable, with none of the collector weight attached.
Pale pink and white is a summer palette, so keep the outfit light. First recipe: light wash denim shorts or straight jeans with a white tee and a grey zip hoodie, where the pink is the only colour and everything else steps back. Second: a cream or sand pair of wide trousers with a soft knit, a tonal look where the shoe warms the whole thing. Steer away from black heavy fits, because they make pale pink look washed out rather than soft. Casual daytime only. Treat with a repellent before the first wear, clean marks immediately with a soft brush and mild solution, and confirm GS to adult size conversion before ordering.
The Dunk's long second life came from outside basketball. Skate shops kept it in circulation because the flat sole and padded tongue worked on a board, and Nike SB made the silhouette a canvas for collaborations. In parallel, Nike's status in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s onward, built on Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max, meant that any Nike court shoe carried social weight before it carried a colourway. Grade school releases are how that weight gets transmitted to the next set of wearers, usually before they know the history. A pink Dunk is a first sneaker for a lot of people, which is its own kind of influence.
This is the standard Dunk Low build scaled for grade school sizing: a panelled upper over a flat rubber court outsole with a pivot circle, a padded collar and a Swoosh laid across the side wall as the main colour block. GS pairs run narrower through the midfoot and lighter overall than adult sizing, which is worth knowing if you are buying up into them. Pale pink against white is the least forgiving combination for daily wear, since both halves show scuffs and neither hides dirt. The toe box crease will appear within the first few wears and is permanent. Nothing about a Dunk resists that, so plan on maintenance rather than preservation.
