Designed by Peter Moore and released on 2 April 2024 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Phantom/Khaki/Light Bone/Summit White. Phantom and khaki is the Dunk with the volume turned down to nothing. Phantom is Nike's name for an off white that leans grey rather than cream, and against khaki it produces a shoe with no contrast to speak of, which on a silhouette built entirely around contrast is a quietly radical decision. The Retro SE designation means this is the heritage shape with a special edition material treatment rather than a new idea. It is the version of the Dunk you buy when you already own the loud ones, and it is the version that will still make sense in a wardrobe long after the food and cartoon colourways have been retired.
Neutrals like these disappear into tailoring, which is the point. Try brown pleated trousers with a cream shirt and a navy knit, where the shoe finishes the outfit without joining the conversation. Or olive fatigues with a grey sweatshirt for the weekend version. These are the Dunks you can wear to an office that allows sneakers. Keep them off wet pavement, since khaki suede water marks are effectively permanent, and use a protector spray at the start of each season rather than once. This last runs long, so drop half a size unless your foot is wide. Store with shoe trees or paper to keep the toe box square.
Nike stopped being a challenger and became infrastructure around 1990, when it moved into its Beaverton, Oregon world headquarters and opened the first Niketown in downtown Portland the same year. A company with its own campus and its own retail theatre no longer needs every product to shout. Neutral colourways are the product of that maturity: shoes made for people who already know what the Swoosh means and do not need reminding. It is a long way from selling 1,300 pairs of imported Japanese running shoes out of a car boot at track meets for about 8,000 dollars.
A retro Dunk Low with a special edition material mix, typically pairing smooth and napped surfaces across the base and overlay panels, over a padded collar, a foam sockliner and a rubber cupsole. Neutral tones are the most demanding to keep: phantom shows every mark because there is no dark panel to absorb one, and khaki suede darkens where it gets wet and stays darkened. Protect both before the first wear, brush the napped sections dry with a soft brush, and never use a wet cloth on suede. The ride is the standard flat, firm, close to the ground Dunk feel, with the vamp creasing inside a week.
