Designed by Peter Moore and released on 8 December 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Shimmer/Sanddrift/Pearl White/Mars Stone. Bill Bowerman poured rubber into his wife's waffle iron because he believed American runners deserved lighter shoes than the market was giving them, and that instinct, changing the material and leaving the shape alone, is still the most Nike thing the company does. The Dunk Low Terry Swoosh is a small version of the same move. The silhouette is untouched, the blocking is familiar, and then the Swoosh arrives in terry cloth instead of leather. It is a texture swap that does more work than a colour swap ever could, because you register it with your hand before your eye. A shoe you have seen ten thousand times suddenly asks to be touched, and that is the whole design.
The terry panel wants soft fabrics around it, not technical ones. Recipe one: pleated cotton trousers, a knitted polo, a light overshirt, so the pile on the Swoosh sits inside a whole outfit of texture. Recipe two: loose denim shorts, a towelling or waffle knit tee, low socks, which is the shoe read literally and works better than it should in summer. Daytime and warm weather, actively bad in rain. Size true to your usual Dunk. Never soak this pair: spot clean the leather with a damp cloth, keep water off the terry entirely, and brush the pile back up after each wear. Store it away from direct sun so the midsole does not yellow.
The Dunk's second life came through skate and street rather than sport, and Nike's relationship with that world has not always been comfortable. Nike SB's 2005 appropriation of Minor Threat's album art for a tour flyer drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike, a reminder that the brand's cultural borrowing has real limits and real critics. Texture led releases like this one belong to a calmer chapter, where the Dunk is a canvas for material experiments instead of iconography. From the 1980s onward Nike products became fixtures of mainstream American youth dress, and this is what a fixture looks like when it starts playing with its own surface.
A low cut upper on the Dunk's flat rubber cupsole, with the defining detail being the terry cloth Swoosh applied over the quarter panel in place of the usual leather overlay. Terry behaves nothing like leather. It absorbs rather than repels, it will hold water and dust in its loops, and it flattens where it rubs, so this is a dry weather shoe with a maintenance requirement that a standard Dunk does not have. Everything else follows the Dunk formula: firm underfoot, close to the ground, snug across the midfoot until it relaxes. Brush the terry with a soft dry brush along the pile direction and it stays plush far longer than it has any right to.
