Nike started in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports, a two-man importer of Onitsuka Tiger runners that Phil Knight sold from the boot of his car at Oregon track meets while Bill Bowerman argued American athletes deserved something lighter. Borrowing from outside itself was the company's first instinct and it never stopped. Nike SB, the skate arm, is where that instinct still runs hardest, pulling graphics and references from culture at large and putting them on a court shoe. This Dunk SB Low Pro hands the pair to Bubbles, so the whole shoe reads in her palette rather than the cartoon's full spectrum. It is a character shoe that stays a skate shoe underneath: the Low Pro shape is untouched, and the Swoosh, first used in June 1971, still does the structural work across the panel.
Blue is the whole point, so let it lead. Recipe one: mid blue washed denim, a plain white heavyweight tee, and a navy or grey zip hoodie, letting the shoe be the only saturated thing below the knee. Recipe two: black cargo or carpenter pants with a cropped bomber, which puts the blue against a dark ground and reads sharper at night. This is a weekend and gig shoe rather than an office one, and the character panels make it a poor match for anything tailored. Size the way you size any Dunk Low and expect the padded SB collar to feel snug for a few wears. Brush the panels dry, keep them off wet monsoon streets, and store them out of direct sun so the colour holds.
Nike's cultural authority was built through basketball and hip hop after the 1984 Michael Jordan signing, marketed by Spike Lee as the on screen character Mars Blackmon, and by the Just Do It line Dan Wieden wrote in 1988. Skateboarding arrived later and less smoothly. Nike SB's 2005 use of Minor Threat's album art drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike, a reminder that borrowing other people's imagery is the line SB has always walked. A licensed cartoon pair like this one sits on the clean side of that line, which is part of why it disappears at retail: it gets the reference without the fight.
This is the Pro spec of the Dunk Low, the version Nike SB tunes for board feel: fatter tongue and collar padding, a broad flat forefoot, and an outsole meant to hold a griptape edge rather than a hardwood floor. That outsole thinking traces straight back to Bowerman ruining his wife's waffle iron to get a lighter, grippier tread. The Bubbles treatment lives in the panels and trim, blue carrying the base with the character's line work handled as print and detail, so nothing about the theme changes how the shoe fits or breaks in. Expect a firm first week and a shoe that softens where you flex it, which is the honest trade for a silhouette built to survive impact.
