Culture Note™
Released on 10 October 2022 and part of the Force 58 line. This release has a suede upper in Summit White/Summit White/White/Summit White. Nike has a habit of entering cultures it did not invent and then staying. It bought the surf brand Hurley in 2002 and Converse in 2003 for 309 million dollars, and it built Nike SB as its skate arm rather than expecting running shoes to survive a griptape beating. The Force 58 SB in Summit White belongs to that arm: a cupsole shaped skate shoe named for its own line rather than borrowed from basketball, finished in the cleanest white Nike sells. Summit White is a shoe that starts pristine and is not expected to stay that way, which is the correct relationship between a skate shoe and its owner.
Two ways to run Summit White. One, skate ready: loose carpenter jeans stacked over the collar, a heavyweight tee, a plain cap, and let the shoe scuff into character. Two, clean streetwear: mid blue straight denim with a short cuff, a white or grey crew, crisp white socks, so the all white upper looks intentional rather than worn out. For skating, expect real wear, and rotate a second pair if you session often. For street use, wipe with a damp cloth after wear, brush the midsole edge with a soft eraser block, and never bleach a white upper, which yellows it.
Nike SB has always had a complicated relationship with the subcultures it sells into. In 2005 the line used Minor Threat's album artwork on a tour flyer, drawing a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike on 27 June 2005 before the matter settled out of court. That episode is the honest backdrop to any Nike skate product: a company with roughly half the US athletic shoe market by 1980 learning, in public, what borrowing from an independent scene costs. It also explains why skaters hold Nike SB to a stricter standard than they hold the main brand.
Skate construction is about survival at specific wear points, the toe, the ollie patch above the outsole and the lace area, and a skate shoe is judged on how it takes abuse there rather than on how light it is. This is a low, flat, board feel oriented build rather than a cushioned runner, so expect a firmer ride and better control of the board edge. Nike's outsole thinking traces back to the waffle tread Bowerman made by pouring rubber into a waffle iron, and flat waffle style patterns are still what grip a board deck best. White uppers scuff instantly; that patina is part of the shoe's life, not a fault.
