Released on 1 August 2022 and part of the Jordan Play Slide line. This release has a synthetic upper in White/Photon Dust/Black. Jordan Brand exists because of a single signing. Nike put Michael Jordan under contract in 1984 and marketed the results with Spike Lee on screen as Mars Blackmon, and what began as a signature shoe became a business of its own. A slide is that business at its most relaxed, the product you wear before a game, after a shower, or on a day with no plans at all. White with Photon Dust is the right register for it: a clean white strap and body with a soft grey tone that keeps the pair from looking clinical. There is nothing to prove in a slide, which is why the branding on it carries so much weight.
Two ways to use it. Post gym or post court, worn barefoot with shorts and a loose tee, which is the intended use and the one it does best. Or as the summer errand shoe with cropped trousers, for the market run, the balcony, the short walk to a cafe. It handles pool and beach use easily since the moulded build dries fast, but it offers no arch support for long walking. Slides run in whole sizes, so size down if you are between and want the strap snug. For care, wash the footbed with soap and water and dry it in shade, and scrub the white sidewall with a magic sponge before marks set in.
The cultural pull here is inherited rather than earned by the product. Jordan's arrival turned Nike into the shoe of basketball, and through basketball into a fixture of hip hop and then of mainstream youth dress, so anything carrying that badge arrives with decades of meaning attached. Nike has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017 under a deal signed in June 2015, extended for another twelve years as announced in October 2024, which keeps the visual language of the sport in the company's hands. A slide is the most casual place that language shows up.
A slide is one moulded piece and a strap, so the entire experience comes down to the footbed and the density of the foam. Photon Dust is a pale, cool grey that shows less than pure white on the footbed, which matters because the footbed is where a slide gets dirty first, from bare feet rather than from the ground. The white body will pick up marks along the sidewall from kerbs and doorframes. Expect a soft, slightly cushioned step and an open build that dries quickly, and expect the strap to be the part that determines whether the fit works for you, since there is nothing else holding your foot.
