Released on 6 July 2025 and part of the Run Defy line. This release has a mesh upper in University Blue/White/Black/Blue Void. University Blue is one of the shades Nike keeps returning to because it works on almost any silhouette, and on the Run Defy it does the most useful job of all: it makes an entry level running shoe look like something you would wear when you are not running. The Run Defy sits at the accessible end of a range that starts with Bill Bowerman's basic complaint in the mid 1960s, that runners were being sold heavy shoes because nobody had bothered to make lighter ones. Blue Ribbon Sports began by importing better ones, then Nike built its own. Six decades later the accessible tier carries the same brief: get more people moving, without asking them to buy a race shoe first.
Two uses. Easy mileage: light shorts or joggers with a technical tee, and treat this as your walk, warm up and recovery shoe rather than the one you take to a session. Casual: mid blue or black jeans, a plain white tee and a grey overshirt, letting University Blue sit as the only saturated colour in the outfit. It suits commuting, travel and long standing days, which is where the soft foam earns its place. Size true to your usual Nike running length. Wash by hand only: cool water, mild soap, soft brush on the mesh, then air dry stuffed with paper so the toe box keeps its shape. Machine drying will warp the foam permanently.
Nike's mass tier is where the brand's cultural reach actually lives. Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988 and launched on 1 July that year with 80 year old runner Walt Stack, was aimed exactly here: not at the sponsored athlete but at the person deciding whether to go out at all. Advertising Age named it a top five slogan of the twentieth century and it is held in the Smithsonian. The sponsored roster from Steve Prefontaine onward gives the running line its credibility, but the everyday shoe is the product that carries the message. In India that reach has been uneven, with Nike priced roughly 30 percent above competitors and closing around 200 stores from 2017.
Read this as a soft, forgiving daily shoe rather than a technical one. The upper is breathable engineered mesh in University Blue with the Swoosh doing double duty as branding and as panel reinforcement across the midfoot, which is how Nike has used the mark since it first appeared on shoes in June 1971. The midsole is a single density foam tuned for comfort over responsiveness, so it feels cushioned underfoot and gives back less than a plated race shoe. A rubber outsole covers the high wear zones under heel and forefoot rather than the whole footprint, which keeps weight down. Mesh dries fast but stains easily in a pale blue, so treat wet pavement grit as the main enemy.
