Culture Note™
Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 11 April 2025 as part of Nike's Air Max 90 line. This release has a suede upper in White/Black/Sanddrift/Hemp. The Air Max 90 belongs to the run that began in 1987, when Nike sealed a pressurised gas unit into a midsole and then cut a window so you could watch it work. That decision turned cushioning into a design feature and gave the whole family its identity. Leopard, style code IF1619 100, takes the most recognisable running silhouette of the period and covers it in animal print, a pattern with no athletic function whatsoever. That is the joke and the reason it works: the 90's panelling was drawn to separate colours cleanly, so it separates print from base just as well. Nike's shoes crossed into street dress from the 1980s onward, and this women's pair is the fully fashion end of that migration.
Recipe one: black slim jeans, a plain black roll neck and a camel coat, treating the leopard as the accessory the outfit otherwise lacks. Recipe two: a denim midi skirt, a white tee and a leather jacket, where the print picks up the brown tones and stops the fit reading too clean. Do not double up on print anywhere else. Air Max 90s fit true to size with a generous toe box, so most people can take their usual number. Printed overlays should be brushed dry and spot cleaned; solvents lift print. Keep the visible air unit away from sharp edges, and store out of direct sun since prints fade unevenly before the base leather does.
Air Max models became staples of mainstream American youth dress and, alongside Air Jordans and Air Force 1s, made the Swoosh a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s onward, resurfacing across 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. Animal print pushes that further, because leopard has spent decades moving between rock, disco, high fashion and street style without ever settling. Putting it on a running shoe designed around a visible air bubble is a collision of two loud ideas that somehow calms both down. It is the kind of styling risk Nike can take precisely because the silhouette itself needs no introduction.
The Air Max 90's upper is built from stacked panels, a mesh base with layered overlays, and on this pair the leopard print lives on those overlays so the pattern arrives in defined blocks rather than washing over the whole shoe. Printed and textured panels usually sit against smooth leather or suede, which gives the eye somewhere to rest. Underneath is the visible air unit in the heel, the detail that made the 1987 line famous, protected by the moulded TPU window that also gives the sole its shape. The waffle inspired rubber outsole traces back to Bill Bowerman's kitchen experiment with a waffle iron. Expect a cushioned, slightly elevated ride and a roomier fit than a flat court shoe.
